PATENTS

My first patent was filed by RCA in 1954. RCA had a Patent Department which took care of all the work (and considerable expense) of filing patent applications at the US Patent Office. Engineers formally communicated a possible invention to the Patent Department by sending a Patent Disclosure form to them. They reviewed the disclosure and decided if it was suitable for filing and, if so, a patent attorney prepared a patent application, which is a special type of legal document. The US Patent Office entered the application into their invention queue. At that time, it took as much as three years for the Patent Office to search existing patents to determine whether the invention was truly unique. They then either rejected the application or prepared the patent document itself. When completed, this document was formally filed as a patent. If that happened, RCA paid the inventor a "bonus" of $1.00 for the invention. This low figure was in recognition that making inventions was part of the engineer's job description, for which he was already paid a (modest) salary. In later years, the "bonus" amount grew to $500.00 or more.
